Installation Instructions and Tips for Best Performance
PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS
The following minimum hardware and software MUST be installed properly in order for this CD to run. If you experience problems running the demo CD, see the TROUBLESHOOTING section below.
PC Version:
- 386, 33MHz PC*
- VGA video card and monitor, capable of 256 colors, 640 x 480 resolution
- 8 MB of memory
- SoundBlaster or compatible sound card
- external speakers
- CD-ROM drive (with data transfer rate of 150 kbs or more)*
- mouse
- DOS 5.0
- Windows 3.1
* - a 486 PC with at least 8 MB of memory and a 300 kbs CD-ROM drive is highly recommended for best playback of the video clips.
Macintosh Version:
- Macintosh LCIII
- video card and monitor, capable of 256 colors, 640 x 480 resolution
- 4 MB of memory*
- CD-ROM drive (with data transfer rate of 150 kbs or more)*
- mouse
- System 7.1 or newer
* - a faster Macintosh with at least 8 MB of memory and a 300 kbs CD-ROM drive is highly recommended for best playback of the video clips.
This CD will work on both PCs running Windows 3.1 and Macintosh computers running System 7.1. It contains all of the necessary software for proper playback, provided the above hardware and software has been installed. This program is designed to play back off the CD-ROM disk directly; no installation onto your hard disk is necessary, however you will get much better video performance if you install the QuickTime files onto your hard disk - see instructions below.
INSTALLING QUICKTIME FILES FOR BETTER VIDEO PERFORMANCE:
On the Macintosh:
(NOTE: your Macintosh should have come with QuickTime software already installed. If it is not, then follow the directions below.)
1. Insert the Nimbus CD into the CD-ROM player.
2. Open the window that contains your System so that the “System Folder” is visible.
3. Find the files on the CD named “QuickTime” and "Apple Multimedia Tuner" - select them and drag it onto your System Folder. You will be asked if you want to put the file in the “Extensions” folder; click OK.
4. Restart your Macintosh.
On a PC:
1. Insert the Nimbus CD into the CD-ROM player.
2. Run the File Manager from Windows.
3. Open two windows; one showing the CD-ROM disk and one showing the disk with your “Windows” directory (usually the C: drive).
4. Find and select the following files on the CD, then drag them onto your Windows directory.

5. If your DOS PATH statement does not include the Windows directory, you will need to modify it to do so. See your DOS manuals for details.
6. Reboot your PC.
TO ACCESS THE FILES UNDER WINDOWS:
1. Insert the Nimbus CD disk into the CD-ROM player.
2. Run the File Manager.
3. Select the CD ROM drive in the File Manager.
4. Open the directory named "Nimbus" if not already open.
TO RUN THE DEMO (PC Version):
1. Check your monitor. If your monitor is capable of multiple resolutions, it should be set to 640 x 480 pixel resolution, with 256 colors.
2. Check your sound card and speakers. Test your sound card with the software that came with it to make sure it is working under Windows. Set the volume to a low level initially; you can adjust it later.
3. Check your mouse. Make sure your mouse is working properly under Windows.
4. Disable any screen savers running under Windows.
5. If the PC is connected to a printer or a network, disconnect it and disable the printer and network software.
6. Quit all other applications that might be running under Windows.
7. There are two versions of the software (see "DIFFERENT VERSIONS" below):
- To run the version with video clips, double-click on the file named "VNIMBUS.EXE"
- To run the version with still images, double-click on the file named "SNIMBUS.EXE"
8. Adjust the volume on your speakers to the best level for your situation.
QUITTING (PC Version):
To Quit the demo at any point, do one of the following:
A. Press the "Escape" key on your keyboard.
B. Go back to the main screen by clicking on the "Main Menu" button anywhere it appears in the demo. Next click on the "Quit" button.
TO ACCESS THE FILES ON A MACINTOSH:
1. Insert the Nimbus CD disk into the CD-ROM player.
3. Select and open the CD ROM drive on the desktop.
4. Open the folder named "Nimbus" if not already open.
TO RUN THE DEMO (Macintosh Version)
1. Check your monitor. If your monitor is capable of multiple resolutions, it should be set to 640 x 480 pixel resolution, with 256 colors.
2. Check your sound level. Set the volume to a low level initially; you can adjust it later.
4. Disable any screen savers that you have running.
5. If the Macintosh is connected to a printer or a network, you may want to disable the network connections for better performance.
6. Quit all other applications that might be running on the Macintosh.
7. There are two versions of the software (see "DIFFERENT VERSIONS" below):
- To run the version with video clips, double-click on the file named "+Start Nimbus with Video"
- To run the version with still images, double-click on the file named "+Start Nimbus with Stills"
8. Adjust the volume on your speakers to the best level for your situation.
QUITTING (Macintosh Version):
To Quit the demo at any point, do one of the following:
A. Press the command and Q keys simultaneously on your keyboard.
B. Go back to the main screen by clicking on the "Main Menu" button anywhere it appears in the demo. Next click on the "Quit" button.
DIFFERENT VERSIONS:
This demo is provided in two versions, one with video clips, and one with still images. The video version is meant for computers that are fast enough and have enough memory to play back the video properly. If the video version does not play back properly on your machine, try running the still version.
TIME-OUTS:
This demo is programmed with two time-outs:
1. Main Menu Timeout - If the demo is left idle while in the Main Menu (the image of the segmented CD) it will time out after 10 seconds and go into “Self-Running Mode.” When in this mode, it will automatically play all of the sections in the demo, one right after the other. Self-Running Mode will be disabled as soon as the mouse is clicked on one of the buttons on the screen.
2. Inactivity Timeout - If the demo is left idle anywhere other than the Main Menu, it will automatically time out after 15 seconds, and return to the Main Menu. From here the Main Menu Time-out will take over (see above).
TROUBLESHOOTING:
Sound does not play:
- check the sound board with the software that came with it to make sure it works properly under Windows (PC Version)
- check to make sure the volume on the sound board is turned up (PC Version)
- make sure you have the current software drivers installed in Windows (PC Version)
- memory may be limited - quit all other applications or install more memory
- make sure your CD drive has a data rate of 150 kbs or higher
Graphics do not fit the full screen:
- check the resolution of your video board: it should be 640 x 480 pixels, with 256 colors
Video clips appear choppy or do not play their sound:
- memory may be limited - quit all other applications or install more memory
- make sure your CD drive has a data rate of 150 kbs or higher
TIPS FOR BEST PERFORMANCE
This demo will run on the minimum hardware noted above, but under low memory situations (5 MB or less), the video clips may appear choppy, not play their audio, or may appear out of synch. Doing the following is highly recommended if possible to get the best performance:
- use the fastest CPU possible
- use 8 MB or more of memory
- quit all other applications that may be running
- use 16 bit audio card (PC Users)
- use a local bus controller (PC Users)
- have ample free space on your hard drive (PC Users)
- use a double-speed CD-ROM drive (data rate of 300 kbs)
- disable the network and printer connections, if applicable
For advanced users:
- make sure that Windows' virtual memory swap file is PERMANENT and set to at least 12MB.
